The Horror of Using Cocaine During Pregnancy Essay

Cocaine is an addictive and powerful stimulant of the central nervous system. Cocaine abuse is a big problem not only in the general population but also among pregnant women. â€Å"Nearly 4 percent women in the Unite States used cocaine during and other illicit drugs that may pose various risk for pregnant women and their babies† (March of Dime, 2013, para.1). The usage of cocaine during pregnancy is very dangerous and can harm the pregnant woman and her unborn baby in many ways. As adults, we have the ability to make choices/decisions and control our own behavior whether right or wrong. However, a child or baby in the womb has no choice and are also subject to suffering the drug abuse. And that is why I’ve focused on this topic. As a matter of fact, the unborn baby will suffer everything because of what their irresponsible mother does while she was pregnant. As newborn they are the one who suffers from mental retardation, irritable, cranky those even just a soft touch they will cry, have heart problems, birth defect, visual and hearing  ¬Ã‚ ¬Ã‚ ¬Ã‚ ¬-problems, or even worse death. In addition, sudden infant death syndromes (SIDS) maybe happen even after giving birth as well. (March of Dimes, 2013, para.9-12) Protection from the dangers of Cocaine Cocaine use during pregnancy is completely preventable. â€Å"Women who stop using cocaine early in pregnancy appear to reduce their risk of having premature or low-birth weight babies† (Gorski, 2002, para.14). The March of Dimes organization encourages women who use cocaine or any type of drug during pregnancy to immediately stop in order to prevent any harm that can cause damage to themselves and unborn babies (Gorski, 2002, para.14). It also conducts some educational programs to inform the public and help them to be fully aware of the dangers cocaine can have on unborn babies.
